I was the second owner of this 1970 Triumph GT6+ (2014 photo). The car has been much-loved in my family ever since. I bought it in 1974 (I think it was a birthday gift to me from me) through Al Rehfield who owned a foreign-car repair shop and was a hot-air balloon enthusiast. The first owner was also a woman. I bought it for $500 and registered it in Tarrant County (Texas) for $20 sales tax, 75 cents title fee and $12.30 registration fee.
I was in college (in my mid-30s) and loved parking it on the University of Texas Arlington campus and getting extra attention as an “older student on campus” with a really cool car. Another favorite memory is pretending I was Bandit on the way home from just seeing the movie, “Smokey and the Bandit” with my daughter. My son, Steve, drove it while he was attending Tarrant County Junior College in 1978. My second mate, Paul Lyons, was driving it when the engine blew in the early 1980s.
Paul, my son Scott, and I began re-building the engine and were “souping it up” in 1980’s terms. Work, vacations, relationships and dedication got in the way, and my baby GT6+ lived in my garage several ignored years. When Paul and I moved to California in 1991, Steve agreed to keep it safe in his garage but never had any intention of restoring it. Scott loved it with everything in him and drove from Holland, Michigan to Fort Worth, Texas (early 2000s) to transport it to its “forever home.” He had it running and registered it in 2003.
It took several years to complete the restoration, and Scott did everything possible to maintain the initial specifications. His favorite drive was to a beach on Lake Michigan by the lighthouse. I went there with him many times. The drive had to include an excellent meal at his favorite restaurant on the way. He drove it often and delighted in the attention it always created. Scott died in 2022. Trying to keep the car in the family, Scott’s wife shipped it to us in Reno.
